Saint Agnes Medical Center was named the Fresno metropolitan area’s top hospital and ranked No. 41 in California in U.S. News & World Report’s 2026-27 Best Hospitals list, released earlier this month.

Community Regional Medical Center placed No. 2 in the Fresno metro area and No. 64 statewide.

The two hospitals were the only facilities across Fresno, Madera, Tulare and Kings counties named Best Regional Hospitals. The publication recognized 505 hospitals across 49 states and Washington, D.C., for demonstrating strong performance across multiple procedures and conditions.

Saint Agnes was also the only hospital in the four-county region named a Best Regional Hospital for Community Access. The distinction went to 73 hospitals nationwide that the publication said provide high-quality care to underserved and vulnerable populations.

Local high-performing ratings

Saint Agnes earned High Performing ratings in 13 procedures and conditions, including ear, nose and throat surgery, gynecological cancer surgery, heart arrhythmia, hip fracture and hip and knee replacements.

Community Regional received High Performing ratings in eight categories and was also rated High Performing in maternity care and rehabilitation.

A High Performing designation is the highest rating U.S. News & World Report awards for individual procedures and conditions. In an adult specialty, the designation means a hospital performed significantly better than average but did not place among the nation’s top 50.

Fresno Surgical Hospital was rated High Performing for back surgery, hip replacement and knee replacement.

Kaiser Permanente Fresno Medical Center received the designation for colon cancer surgery, hip fracture and pneumonia, while Clovis Community Medical Center was rated High Performing for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

In Tulare County, Kaweah Health Medical Center earned High Performing ratings for hip fracture, knee replacement, maternity care and rehabilitation.

New rehabilitation rankings

The 2026-27 edition introduced state and metropolitan specialty rankings for cancer; cardiology, heart and vascular surgery; orthopedics; and rehabilitation.

Kaweah Health received the region’s highest statewide rehabilitation placement, ranking No. 15 in California.

San Joaquin Valley Rehabilitation Hospital ranked No. 28 statewide and No. 1 in the Fresno metro area, while Community Regional placed just behind at No. 29 statewide and No. 2 in the metro area.

All three were classified as High Performing in rehabilitation.

“U.S. News’ performance-driven metrics ensure American families can confidently find and choose high-quality care, often right in their own communities,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News.

The publication said it increased the weight given to risk-adjusted outcomes, including survival and complication rates, in determining the latest rankings and ratings. The analysis also considered preventable complications and patient experience, drawing from more than 800 million patient care records.
