When a Kingsburg grower decided to develop his own automated solution to labor shortages, the robotic sprayer started out on his own farm. Now, the GUSS — Global Unmanned Spray System — just got another accolade, this time at what’s billed as the most influential tech event in the world.

The Herbicide GUSS was an honoree of the 2023 CES (Consumer Electronics Show) Innovation Awards and will be recognized at the event taking place this week in Las Vegas.

The award program recognizes outstanding design and engineering across various consumer technology product sectors. From among those, a single “Best of Innovation” Award is given.

The Herbicide GUSS was recognized in the Food/Ag Tech category. The Herbicide GUSS is designed to work in orchards spraying for weeds. It was also named as one of the World Ag Expo’s Top 10 Products for 2023.

GUSS Automation owner Dave Crinklaw developed the automated robot to deal with continuing shortages in agricultural labor. Other GUSS models were also developed to work in different kinds of ag applications, including a mini GUSS designed for tighter rows.

“We innovate out of necessity for our own farm business. We also know that if the machine helps us, it will help other growers facing the same challenges we are. Herbicide GUSS is our latest innovation, and we are so excited to be honored with our third CES Innovation Award,” said Gary Thompson, chief operating officer at GUSS Automation.
