Four GameStop locations in the Valley will close in January, part of the struggling retailer’s ongoing effort to shutter underperforming stores.
A “significant number” of stores were slated to close following the closure of nearly 600 stores in 2024, according to a 2025 Business Insider report. Texas-based GameStop operated over 2,300 stores as of the beginning of 2025, fastcompany.com reported.
GameStop locations in Selma, Madera and Porterville are slated to close, with a Fresno location on the chopping block as well. The Selma and Madera locations will close on Wednesday, Jan. 14, with the Porterville location shuttering on Wednesday, Jan. 7.
Selma’s GameStop location announced the closure on social media Monday.
The GameStop located at the corner of First and Shields avenues will also close its doors this year, however, a final operating date was not confirmed.
In 2024, the company committed to focusing on increasing efficiency, as well as shuttering stores in underperforming markets.
There are reports from all across the country Tuesday of GameStop stores closing.
“We will continue to focus on cost containment, including closing underperforming stores, as we look to operate with increased efficiency,” according to a company filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Despite gaining attention as a ‘meme stock’ in 2021 when retail investors drove shares to record highs, GameStop has continued to struggle with its core business model as gaming shifts increasingly to digital downloads.
The store also closed several Valley locations last year including now-closed stores at Sierra Vista Mall and the Universal Park shopping center near Blackstone and El Paseo avenues.
Following the closures, GameStop will still operate three Fresno stores and one Clovis store, and also has two locations in Visalia and one in Tulare.
A call to GameStop’s corporate office went unanswered as of early Tuesday afternoon.
