Madera is getting what Memphis can only hope for — for now.

Madera is due to receive its first In-N-Out location, taking the spot of a former barbecue joint near the fairgrounds.

That’s the word from Darren Rose, the new executive director of the Madera County Economic Development Corp.

It could possibly open by 2024, Rose added.

In-N-Out will go in the former Sugar Pine Smokehouse, which is scheduled to close Dec. 24 after four years in business, according to a social media post.

When Sugar Pine Smokehouse opened in November 2018, the head chef told The Business Journal its smoked ribs, brisket, pork bellies and more would be reasonably priced to fit a “blue-collar” model.

An In N Out opening in any city makes for big local news — and there’s no exception with Madera, with a Facebook page titled “Bring In N Out to Madera” with more than 3,000 followers.

Memphis, Tennessee — a place renowned for its world-class barbecue — recently spoke out in a survey in the Commercial Appeal newspaper about the restaurants they would like to see the most.

Among the top 5? The legendary, California-based In-N-Out Burger, which has nearly 400 restaurants, but only as far east as Texas.

And soon to be a new Central California locale to be built from the ground up. The next closest In-N-Outs to Madera currently are Merced and Fresno.
