The retail shopping experience continues to evolve as Macy’s, Inc. prepares to unveil virtual and augmented reality for home decor and beauty products.

By early November, 69 stores across the country will have virtual reality capabilities that allow customers to play around with furniture layout in simulated versions of their own homes, according to a press release from the company on Monday.

“Macy’s is focused on providing customers with fresh experiences, and we are always looking for new ways to engage our customers in store, online and via our mobile app,” said Hal Lawton, president of Macy’s. “Our technology enhancements are practical applications that will engage our customers while also driving sales.

A list of stores that either now have or will have VR and AR options is below.

In pilot stores where the “Visualize Your Space” technology was being tested, the company said they saw a 60 percent increase in “basket size,” versus sales that didn’t use the technology. Macy’s concluded that this was due to people feeling more comfortable adding more items to purchases afters seeing how they interact with each other in a room.

They also saw that for customers who used VR to make a purchase, returns resulted in less than two percent of total transactions. The company did not provide a comparison number for non-VR purchases.

The technology extends even to beauty products for 50 stores nationwide. The “Virtual Makeover” feature allows customers to see how different varieties of makeup might look without physically applying it.

While the “Virtual Makeover” capability doesn’t appear to be coming to the Central Valley in the near future, users of the Macy’s mobile app can access the technology on their phones. For Apple users with an iPhone 7 or newer, the Visualize Your Space features are available, while Android users will be have the capabilities in 2019, the release went on to say.
