A popular Central Valley auto dealer has announced a luxury expansion into new territory.

Nelson Group Automotive, owners of the Selma Auto Mall, recently acquired Monterey-based Jaguar Land Rover and Volvo Cars Monterey.

The deal — the terms of which were not disclosed — closed Dec. 9.

Nelson Group Automotive has been in business since the early 1990s and currently owns 14 brands including Chevrolet, Chrysler, Honda, Jeep, Nissan and Hyundai.

Amber Nelson Billingsley, communications director for Nelson Group said that they are always looking to expand into new territories.

Along with Jaguar and Land and Rover, Genesis is the other luxury brand being sold by the group.

“The store was for sale and it was an opportunity we saw. The previous owner was looking to sell and it was a personal reach out to see if we would be interested in buying,” Nelson Billingsley said.

The expansion into Monterey marks the second dealership the group has outside of the Central Valley. The Nelson Group Automotive also has a dealership in Elk Grove.

The Nelson Group Automotive also announced Andrew Jennings, who formerly worked with Lexus Monterey Peninsula and has more than 10 years of experience in the automotive industry, as the new general manager for the Jaguar dealership.

“We are excited for this new chapter and look forward to serving the Monterey community,” said Dwight Nelson, president of Nelson Group Automotive, in a statement. “Automotive is a part of who we are, and we can’t imagine life without it. We thrive on new beginnings, meeting new people and most importantly, giving back to our community.”

The Selma Auto Mall was recently named “Best Auto Dealership” as part of The Business Journal’s annual Best of Central Valley Business Awards, as voted on by readers online.
