Hanford Mall plans to install $3.7 million worth of solar panel arrays on its roof later this year.

The installation should provide enough power to supply a significant portion of the mall’s power needs, said Manager Joanne Doerter.

“It will really help in the summer months,” Doerter said.

The system capacity is 1.5 megawatts and is said to be the biggest rooftop system in Kings County.

Construction of the new system, which involves a new roof for the center as well, will start in September. The mall is also installing all new LED lighting around the property in a bid to both save money and boost the quality of the lighting at the shopping center.

The Hanford Mall was in the news earlier this year with the announcement that it would have four new restaurant openings, including Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Pieology Pizza, Buffalo Wild Wings and the Valley’s first Dunkin Donuts location.
