The Fresno County Bicycle Coalition is hosting a car-free event, dubbed CenCalVia, Oct. 2, as a way to motivate Fresno residents to travel by foot, bike or roller skate.

That Sunday, a one-mile stretch of Ventura Avenue between First and Cedar avenues will be closed to vehicle traffic.

The one-day event aims to bring together residents from all over the city to participate in safe physical activities and help build a sense of community where individuals and families connect with one another and learn more about local businesses.

CenCalVia is inspired by the Bogota, Columbia events that started 40 years ago and spawned the now famous cicLAvia events in Los Angeles. This is the first-ever such event for Fresno.

CenCalVia will feature music, food, crafts and vendors and there will be activities, including dancing, Zumba, chalk murals and bike polo.

An opening ceremony will be held at the main check-in station directly in front of the Ventura Wedding Chapel on the corner of Ventura and 4th avenues. Speakers at the ceremony include District 5 councilmember Sal Quintero and Fresno County Bicycle Coalition chair Ed Smith.

For the event, the coalition is partnering with Cultiva La Salud, the Central Valley Community Foundation, Fresno Cycling Club, Fiesta Auto Insurance, the City of Fresno-District 5 and the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee for the City of Fresno.

The event will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
