The annual Bass Lake Fishing Derby will be held May 5 and 6 and anglers will have the opportunity to catch big money along with big fish, Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau said in a release.

Sponsored by the Bass Lake Chamber of Commerce, the annual derby is the first event of the summer season at the popular lake. There will be $55,000 in prize money available, with winnings based on which of the over 1,000 tagged rainbow trout that the anglers catch.

“This is a really fun event that is a great way to start the busy season here at Bass Lake,” said Michelle Miller of the Bass Lake Chamber of Commerce and Miller’s Landing Resort, in the release. “It brings in a lot of families. What better way to bring the family together than fishing at Bass Lake.”

Each of the tagged fish will be worth varying amounts and will be released into the lake just before the tournament. There will be 849 fish worth $20; 150 fish worth $100; one fish will bring in $5,000 and two “grand prize” fish will be worth $10,000 each.

“All in all, entrants have a good chance of walking away with a nice payday,” Miller said.
