Gains in technology and materials companies were mostly outweighed by losses elsewhere on Wall Street, leaving major indexes mixed at the closing bell.

Facebook rose 1.4 percent Monday, while Microsoft gained 0.7 percent.
Banks, health care and real estate companies fell.

Abercrombie & Fitch plunged 21 percent after the clothing seller said it was no longer seeking a sale.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 2 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,427. The Dow Jones industrial average slipped 5 points to 21,408.

The Nasdaq composite increased 23 points, or 0.4 percent, to 6,176. Small-company stocks fell. The Russell 2000 lost 7 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,408.

About as many stocks rose as fell on the New York Stock Exchange.
