The brewery that spurred Downtown Fresno’s Brewery District and Ale Trail aims to do the same for Merced’s downtown.
Tioga Sequoia Brewing Co. announced via Facebook today that it would be launching a second location in the north Valley city. Fittingly, they chose a building called the Tioga — previously Hotel Tioga — as the new location.
The decision comes with “years of patiently looking for the right opportunity and the right community,” the post read.
“Our plan is to develop a second brewery/taproom in Downtown Merced, all while embracing the local culture and flavor, giving our new location a unique identity all its own. We are excited at the potential impact that we can have on the entertainment and nightlife scene in Downtown … as well as bringing innovative, fresh craft beer to the community with beers brewed exclusively for Merced,” the post read.
It did not state an opening date.
Tioga-Sequoia first opened in 2010 at 745 Fulton St., hosting events such as FresYes Fest, Tacos Brews & Jams and many others.
Other breweries also made the move to Downtown Fresno, crediting the brewery for paving the way. On the other side of the railroad tracks, Full Circle Brewing Co. in Chinatown came back in a big way with new ownership. Zack’s Brewing opened at 712 Fulton St. toward the end of 2018. The Modernist, a craft cocktail lounge opened in January only a few yards from Tioga-Sequoia. Broadway 411 Ales & Spirits has plans to open a tasting room for its suds next door to Tioga.
South of Shaw Brewing Co. hopes to open “soon” in Downtown Fresno’s Peerless Building, not far from the Brewery District on Broadway Street, according to a Facebook post.
Procreations Brewing Co. found a spot at 1929 Santa Clara St., on the other side of Ventura Street. They are working with the City of Fresno and don’t have a set timeline yet.
The move is part of a “renaissance” for Downtown Merced, said Frank Quintero, director of economic development for the City of Merced. Project manager Nuovo Real Estate is revitalizing three historic locations all within one block of each other. One building, El Capitan Hotel, will house BitWise Industries, which announced their expansion to the city in 2019. A historic theater and the Tioga will also be renovated.
The previously-named Hotel Tioga has housed celebrities and politicians on their way to Yosemite, according to Quintero. Deferred maintenance left it dilapidated, but still in use. It will soon house market-rate housing.
Downtown Merced is a largely urban area, with Bank of America, Merced City Hall and UC Merced’s Downtown Community Campus in close proximity.
Tioga-Sequoia will occupy the frontage on West Main Street of The Tioga.
