For many, a family-owned business is not only a job but a way of life. Maintaining business relationships can be challenging enough at a workplace, not to mention when that extends into home life.
With that in mind, a recent study reveals Fresno as one of the nation’s top cities for family-owned businesses.
According to a recent study conducted by small business lending company OnDeck, Fresno ranks No. 2 in the nation by percentage of businesses that are family-owned, falling just short of the top spot claimed by San Antonio-New Braunfels, Texas.
The study revealed that 33.74% of businesses in Fresno are family-owned, contributing to California’s overall small-business percentage of 27.44%, which ranks middle of the pack (No. 28) among the 50 states.
“The Central Valley’s economy thrives in part due to the strength of family businesses, several of which are in the region’s dominant agricultural sector,” said Dr. Fernando Parra, director of the Institute for Family Business at Fresno State. “The Family-owned enterprises prioritize long-term vision and legacy. This focus manifests in investments that build a sustainable future, such as brand reputation, employee loyalty, and community well-being.”
Parra added that the commitment to longevity, stability and community investment creates a strong business environment for the Valley as a whole, citing multigenerational businesses and their desire to preserve family legacy for future generations contributing to not only economic success in the region, but creating a testament to a business’ history and values.
As a state, California also ranked high overall when compared to other states that see family-owned businesses pay employees the highest wages (No. 6, $54,991). Other categories saw California rank middle of the pack including states where family-owned businesses employ the most people (No, 33.71%) and family-owned businesses growth (No. 24, -1.11%).
“Family businesses are the bedrock of the economy,” a news release from OnDeck reads. “Globally, family-owned businesses make up more than 70% of GDP and 60% of employment, delivering higher total shareholder returns, deeper feelings of fulfillment and stronger levels of employee trust and engagement.”
The study included data analyzed in February 2024.
