The Fresno County Department of Public Health (FCDPH) reported Tuesday, Dec. 23, an increase in influenza cases, as well as other respiratory illnesses, leading to higher-than-normal volumes at emergency rooms across the county.

The illnesses are linked to several circulating illnesses including influenza (flu), COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and have been placing additional strain on the region’s health care resources both for adults and children.

FCDPH urges residents to protect themselves by taking several steps, recommending residents stay up to date on flu, COVID-19 and RSV vaccines, as well as getting tested when exhibiting symptoms including fever, chills, runny nose, sore throat, cough, loss of taste or smell and stomach issues.

The department also urged individuals who have tested positive or exhibiting symptoms to stay home to avoid spreading any one of the several illnesses circulating this holiday season.

“The FCDPH encourages residents to know when to utilize the emergency rooms, urgent care centers, and their primary health care provider,” a news release from the FCDPH issued Tuesday reads. “Using the right level of care for your condition helps ensure emergency rooms remain available for life-threatening illnesses and injuries.”

The department also provided resources for determining whether or not an emergency visit is necessary.

Other counties in California, including Tulare County, are also experiencing emergency department overcrowding, largely due to the spread of flu and other respiratory illnesses, as well as local staffing shortages for both physicians and nurses, according to a KSEE24/CBS47 report.

Additional weekly influenza reports are also provided by the FCDPH, and California Department of Public Health.
