The Madera Irrigation District was recently awarded two U.S. Bureau of Reclamation WaterSMART grants totaling $873,161.

The first application will expand the district’s existing SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system by installing 14 new solar-powered automated gates and meters throughout the district.

The project is estimated to conserve 3,600 acre-feet of water on average per year.

The second application will underground about 6,500 feet of existing canal into a pipeline to reduce seepage. A small basin will also be built to capture spill water and manage recharge. The project is expected to conserve 1,750 acre-feet of water per year.

Both projects are expected to be fully operational by October 2018.
