The owner of longtime Fresno business Heroes Comics announced Tuesday that its doors will close, citing rising rent and a desire to spend time with family.
In an announcement on Facebook, owner Dave Allread thanked his customers for 34 years of support and friendship.
The current lease on the building expires at the end of the year. Allread said the landlord intends to raise the building’s rent by 70% over the next several years.
Allread, 61, said despite having the ability and desire to continue operating the comic book shop, retirement will give him the opportunity to visit his two grandsons who live out of state.

“It is a very hard decision to make, since 2022 was our 2nd most profitable year ever,” the statement reads. “I want to enjoy life while I still can and do the things I have put off for a long time.”
He said he respects the landlord’s decision to increase the rent.
Allread, who has worked nearly 50 years in retail, expressed his thanks to customers over the decades.
Starting Tuesday, back-issues paperbacks, toys, posters and cards will be marked at a 50% discount, with other items going on sale as the store looks to reduce its inventory by Dec. 31.
“I have a lot of emotions going on right now because I feel like I could do this forever, but on the other hand, it is time for me to make me and my family the number 1 priority,” the statement continues. “I truly cherish the great people I have met over the years.”
Heroes is located at 110 E. Shaw Ave. in Fresno, and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Heroes extends its hours on Wednesday to 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.
