Fresno State’s Craig School of Business is the recipient of a $100,000 donation from Fresno State alumni Jim and Chelisa Vagim.

Jim and Chelisa, as well as their daughters Madeline and Georgia, expressed their belief that university faculty play essential roles in student success and community development, attributing their donation to the importance of those roles.

“Faculty are forming our future generations, so it’s important for them to get the funding they need,” Chelisa said in a press release from the university. “I know some kids struggle in college, but having teachers who can make an impact on their lives is one of the most important things we can do.”

Dr. Julie Olson-Buchanan, dean of the Craig School, said that 60 percent of the donation will be dedicated to an endowment ensuring the school continues to grow its core faculty.

“This generous donation from Jim and Chelisa Vagim will be used to attract and retain high-quality scholars who are committed to teaching and creating new knowledge through their research,” Olson-Buchanan said. “Putting research faculty in the classroom keeps our curriculum up to date and trains students in research methods and cutting edge-developments.”

The Vagims, now residing in Pasadena, grew up in the Central Valley. Jim and Chelisa’s families ran rival car dealerships in Porterville. After attending Fresno State, the couple married and relocated to the Los Angeles area where Jim continued building a career in auto finance.

The family has hosted the Send off BBQ, an event welcoming incoming Fresno State students from Southern California.

The Vagims believe their gift will provide economic opportunities for students who may remain in the Central Valley.

“We wanted to put our money where it would have the most meaningful impact,” Jim said. “The engagement the Craig School has with the business community is absolutely essential for students.”
