A former Fresno IRS employee plead guilty Tuesday to selling morphine to a coworker who suffered a fatal overdose.
According to court records, in May 2020 Margarita Aispuro-Camacho, 46, sold morphine pills she had been prescribed to one of her coworkers.
The coworker died the next day from an overdose of the morphine that Aispuro-Camacho had provided and other prescription drugs that the co-worker obtained from other sources, according to U.S. Attorney Philip A. Talbert.
Aispuro-Camacho had previously sold morphine and other drugs she had been prescribed to the co-worker on at least five occasions, according to court records, profiting a few thousand dollars from the sales.
The case is the product of an investigation by the U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) and Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Barton is prosecuting the case.
Aispuro-Camacho is scheduled to be sentenced on June 20 by U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Thurston. Aispuro-Camacho faces a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
