Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer announced that every bus in the Fresno Area Express (FAX) fleet is now outfitted with free Wi-Fi service for riders.

The installed equipment gives FAX the ability to have two networks on board: one specifically for free public Wi-Fi for the entire ride and another for City use to improve communication. All 126 fixed-route buses and 45 paratransit buses are outfitted with the new technology.

The $2.8 million project modernizes 20-year-old vehicle technology and communications for FAX staff, allowing for safer and more efficient transportation for all, according to a news release.

Since 2021 the City has sought to add Wi-Fi to FAX service after a pilot program that started with 18 buses.

“In today’s busy world, staying connected is key — and that doesn’t change when you get on a FAX bus,” said Mayor Dyer. “Our drivers get students to school, workers to their jobs, and people to their important appointments. I’m proud that FAX will now be able to provide a convenient and enjoyable ride for everyone.”

FAX has 18 routes and 126 buses (including nine battery electric buses) and served 8.1 million riders traveling over 23 million miles between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023.

“A common divide facing our Fresno families isn’t necessarily a geographical one, but a digital one,” said Council President Tyler Maxwell.

FAX also has a paratransit demand response service, known as Handy Ride, with 45 vehicles providing over 139,000 trips during the same time period for residents who are unable to utilize fixed-route service due to a qualifying condition under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Each service operates 7 days a week, 363 days a year.
