A former credit union branch manager was arrested Thursday, accused of stealing more than $60,000 from members accounts to use to promote herself on TikTok.

Kings County resident Esther Andrade Olson, 48, was arrested on allegations she embezzled money from multiple members’ accounts at a credit union branch in Tulare County.

Olson began working at the credit union in 2005 and was promoted to assistant branch manager in 2019, according to court documents. In July and August 2022, Olson is alleged to have made several unauthorized withdrawals from the accounts of four members, including seven totaling $35,000 from a single member.

A LinkedIn profile shows Olson worked at EECU during that period.

When questioned by credit union officials, Olson abruptly resigned from her position, telling a colleague “I know how this goes. I’m done,” according to court documents, which also state that Olson was using embezzled funds to promote herself on TikTok.

Investigators also allege she sent some of the embezzled funds to a boyfriend in Texas — himself a TikTok user with hundreds of thousands of followers.

The U.S. District Attorney said it has surveillance video of Olson making the withdrawals. She also acknowledged making the withdrawals but stated in emails that the victims had approved them, according to court documents.

Investigators found that she started working at another financial institution after quitting her job at the credit union.

From April through December 2022, investigators said she spent more than $60,000 on TikTok “coins” that could be shared and used to promote herself on the app. The coins can be converted into virtual credits called “diamonds” that can be withdrawn in exchange for actual money.

TikTok records show Olson had an account with thousands of followers, according to court documents.

A search of TikTok revealed an account “esther.a79” featuring dozens of selfie videos set to music. It has more than 13,000 followers.

This case is the product of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Chan Hee Chu and Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Barton are prosecuting the case.

If convicted, Olson faces a maximum statutory penalty of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
