A Mexican air carrier is pausing nonstop service out of the Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT).

City officials expressed concern about the move, but maintain confidence in the international partnership.

Aeromexico will temporarily suspend international flights for its Fresno-to-Guadalajara route beginning on Aug. 28, according to a search of the airline’s flight scheduling portal. The suspension would lift on Nov. 2 — in time for the holiday travel season.

The Fresno Bee first reported the news.

Volaris is the only other airline operating out of FAT that offers nonstop flights to Guadalajara.

Media and Public Relations Officer Vikkie Calderon said the airport was informed by Aeromexico of the route’s temporary suspension on Tuesday for operational needs.

Calderon said fortunately, FAT has other airlines that offer flights to Guadalajara.

Delta Air Lines, Aeromexico’s alliance partner, also offers flights from Fresno to Guadalajara with stops.

“While not ideal given Aeromexico’s strong performance in the Fresno market with recent load factors in the 85%-95% range, we value our partnership with the airline and recognize ongoing industry constraints can lead to schedule reductions,” Calderon said.

FAT isn’t the airport in the nation where Aeromexico is cutting back service. Enrilia.com, an airline-schedule-tracking website, reported this week that the airline paused several other routes to its Guadalajara hub, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Salk Lake City and San Francisco.

The news comes just a few weeks after Fresno officials broke ground on a $127 million expansion at FAT that includes a new international arrivals facility to accommodate anticipated growth.

In a statement Thursday, Mayor Jerry Dyer said the administration is encouraged that the Fresno-Guadalajara suspension is only temporary.

“We look forward to our ongoing partnership with Aeromexico especially in light of our terminal expansion which will triple our international flight capacity,” Dyer said.
