Monday marked a new era for Community Health System in Fresno under the leadership of new President and CEO Craig Wagoner.
Wagoner has served as the Community Health System’s vice president and chief operating officer since 2020, joining the organization about 18 years ago as the chief operating officer at Clovis Community Medical Center.
Wagoner takes the role as former CEO Craig Castro retires after 40 years in health care — more than half at Community. Castro took the helm at Community in 2020, just days before the system received its first Covid-19 patient.
Wagoner has been with the organization for nearly 18 years.
“We have made great strides over the years, and we have much to celebrate — but there is still so much more to do,” Wagoner said in a statement this week. “We will face the challenges and seize the opportunities of this rapidly changing healthcare landscape with laser focus on both healing our patients and keeping them well. Advancing our clinical excellence, enriching patient experience and improving access to care will continue to guide us — driving healthcare innovation, enhancing our services and adding even greater value for our patients through every stage of life.”
When Wagoner’s promotion was announced in December 2024, Community Health System Board President Roger Sturdevant said that Wagoner has been part of the organization’s succession plan since his appointment as chief operating officer.
Sturdevant added that Wagoner’s experience makes him a prime candidate for other health systems nationwide, but emphasized his long-time connection to Community as a driving factor in the network’s commitment to his appointment.
“I am excited for the journey ahead and look forward to all we’ll accomplish together,” Wagoner said. “Thank you for the trust and support you’ve always shown me, and for the opportunity to lead this amazing organization.”
