Kate del Castillo, the star of the runaway hit telenovela “La Reina del Sur” — and the person who brokered a controversial meeting between actor Sean Penn and drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman — is making an appearance in Fresno today at the newest Vallarta Supermarket in town.

Castillo is currently on a tour of Latino supermarkets promoting a line of tequila, called Tequila Honor Del Castillo.

She may not be well known north of the border among non-Spanish speakers, but Del Castillo is one of Mexico’s best-known actors. One of her biggest roles was as a female drug kingpin in “La Reina del Sur,” translated as “Queen of the South.”

She received a fair amount of notoriety in January 2016 when Sean Penn wrote an article for Rolling Stone magazine about his clandestine meeting with El Chapo in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, while he was on the run from Mexican authorities after escaping from prison. As the story goes, Del Castillo started a texting friendship with El Chapo, which eventually led her to the introduction with Penn.

The article sparked a pretty big backlash, and the meeting is widely seen as the linchpin that helped Mexican authorities arrest El Chapo, who was extradited to New York and is currently awaiting trial at a correctional center in Manhattan.

Del Castillo will be greeting fans and autographing bottles of her tequila at Vallarta’s West Clinton Avenue location from 4-7 p.m.. For more information, visit the Vallarta website.
