A new survey of California voters finds an electorate that — while remaining optimistic — is bracing for lean times ahead.

The “People’s Choice, 2022” poll from the California Chamber of Commerce finds that 65% of respondents believe California is in a recession. And when compared to a year ago, voters by a 2-to-1 marge believe their households’ finances and current economic situation are worse.

The poll also found that Californians are tightening their belts. Three out of four voters say rising prices have caused them to adjust spending habits “a lot” (35%) or “some” (40%). Nearly all (93%) of voters noticed higher prices for groceries, 87 saw higher gas prices, 81% noticed higher prices for eating out and 68% for utility costs.

On a more optimistic note, a slim majority (51%) think the economy will improve a year from now, while a slightly stronger majority (54%) say their own economic situation is likely to improve over the next year.

One point was inescapable: California’s business climate leaves much to be desired. Some 87% believe the Golden State must do more to attract and retain businesses in the state. Another 63% came out and said California has fostered an unfriendly business climate.

The concerns were shared widely among demographic groups and regions, but are especially strong with younger votes and residents of the Central Valley and Inland Empire.

When asked how important it is for the Governor and Legislature to address the issue, 48% said it was extremely import and a third said it was very important.

The poll was conducted by Bold Decision and Pierrepont Consulting and Analytics with 1,000 online interviews Nov. 12-14.
