Fresno County District 4 Supervisor Buddy Mendes announced his intention to retire on Wednesday, and is endorsing former Sherriff Margaret Mims for the seat.

Mendes and Mims went on Ray Appleton’s radio show on KMJ Wednesday to discuss the move. Mendes, whose current terms runs through 2026, said he would like more time with family and to run his ranch, where he grows almonds, pistachios and more.

“There’s a lot going on in my life,” Mendes said Wednesday. He plans to serve out his current term.

Mims said she has frequently been asked to run for state and federal office, but she said her brand of public service is geared toward local issues.

“That’s my wheelhouse,” she said. “That’s what I love best.”

She said public safety is a major issue for District 4, which includes nine incorporated cities in Fresno County.

Mendes is known for his expertise in water issues, and said he will continue to offer his services in that area.

Mims joins State Center Community College District Trustee Danielle Para of Fowler and Parlier Mayor Alma Beltran in the District 4 contest, reported GVWire.

Mims served four terms as Fresno County’s sheriff.
