Madera County and the Madera Rescue Mission celebrated the unlocking Monday of a new community of tiny homes for unhoused families.

The Madera County Board of Supervisors held a ribbon cutting for the new triage center at the Madera Rescue Mission.

The triage center, located at 322 Elm St. in Madera, includes six tiny homes — 576 square-foot units with two bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and seating area.

The units are available to individuals and families experiencing homeless upon eligibility.

The project broke ground in December 2023 with nearly all of the funding coming from federal programs.

The total cost was more than $1.2 million, funded through U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant funds, administered by the California Department of Housing and Community Development and local American Rescue Plan Act funds.
