(AP) — A prominent Southern California philanthropist has donated $20 million to San Diego State University to create endowed scholarships that will support about 150 students annually.

U-T San Diego says (http://bit.ly/1euaFw9 ) the gift by Conrad Prebys announced Wednesday is the largest single donation ever received by the school.

To honor the contribution, the university named its newly opened student center the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union.

Among those who will be provided scholarships are former foster youths, student veterans, those pursuing biomedical research and engineering and students studying creative and performing arts.

University officials say the first scholarships will be offered in the fall.

Prebys has made large donations to many San Diego institutions, including Scripps Health.
