Millions in federal funding is coming to the community of Calwa for street and sidewalk improvements.

The County of Fresno is announcing that $4 million has been allocated to the unincorporated portion of Calwa for street and sidewalk improvements through the Highway Infrastructure Program, part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act passed by Congress on March 21.

Dubbed the Calwa Complete Streets Project, repairs will be made to roads and sidewalks throughout the community just south of Fresno.

On Monday, Fresno County Board of Supervisors Chairman Sal Quintero and Rep. Jim Costa will hold a press conference at the Calwa United Methodist Church to announce the $4 million allocation.

“The funding will go toward repairing and building new streets, sidewalks, and ADA-compliant curb ramps. This will benefit students who walk to Calwa Elementary School, residents traveling to work, and provide better access for those visiting local businesses,” Quintero said.

Rep. Costa selected and secured funding for Calwa Complete Streets as part of the Community Project Funding Process for the fiscal year 2023 budget.

A total of $7 million is available. In addition to the $4 million from the feds, $2.7 million comes from the state’s Active Transportation Program and $300,000 from the County’s Measure C.

A recent County-led survey showed the top priorities for Calwa residents are road repairs, followed by street lighting and sidewalks.

Construction is anticipated to start in summer 2025.
