INVEST Fresno, a nonpartisan organization, conducted a public opinion survey of more than 400 registered Fresno voters from all seven council districts, gauging support for Fresno’s retail distribution and warehousing sector and other issues.
The survey found that 71% of respondents believe Fresno is making progress in its retail distribution and warehousing.
“It is clear that residents throughout all seven council districts recognize the immense value that retail distribution and warehousing, primarily housed in South Central Fresno, bring to the entire city,” Ethan Smith, Chairman of INVEST Fresno’s board of directors, said in a news release.
Of the remaining 29% of voters, 18% believe that the retail distribution is a net negative for Fresno, while the other 11% are unsure.
Some 39% of those who support retail distribution believe that jobs and wages are the main reasons for their support. Location (13%), taxes (12%), companies (6%) and industry diversity (5%) were also reasons people had a positive perception of warehousing and distribution.
“These businesses are fueling Fresno’s economy – providing much-needed jobs, health care benefits, and career advancement, not to mention the tax revenue that funds essential services for all residents. Fresno has the opportunity to facilitate an environment that supports policies to not only retain existing businesses but attract new businesses and industries to the area so Fresno can continue to grow and thrive for future generations,” Smith said.
The survey also examined some of the top issues facing Fresno. According to the voters, the top three issues were the cost of living (75%), homelessness (59%), and the economy (43%). Nearly half (49%) believe that Fresno is heading in the wrong direction in general, while 31% believe it’s going in the right direction.
