Fresno has been selected among the top 10 most affordable U.S. travel destinations for the holidays.

The study by fintech info company SmartAsset ranks 35 of the largest U.S. cities based on cost of a three-day trip for a family of four, including hotels, rental cars, air travel and meals. Fresno came in No. 7 on the list, with a total price tag of $3,449.

Columbus, Ohio, was ranked No. 1 with $2,867. Fresno was the only California destination in a top 10 dominated by Southern U.S. cities including El Paso, Texas ($3,014) at No. 2 and Memphis, Tennessee ($3,228) at No. 3.

The South tends to offer lower daily hotel room rates and meal costs compared to other locations, according to the study.

Fresno offers low costs across hotel, car rentals and meals — ranking in the top five cities across all three metrics. For a family of four, that means daily hotel room rates around $282, car rental rates below $45 and daily meal costs just under $100.

“Travel is top of mind as Americans navigate into the new year. According to the U.S. Travel Association, nearly one-third of Americans will make taking a vacation one of their highest priorities. And so far, travel spending for September 2022 has hit its highest ceiling since the pandemic,” according to SmartAsset. “With prices up across the board with rising inflation, getting the most out of a vacation budget is important and some cities offer a better opportunity to do so.”
