A recent survey ranks Fresno among the top-10 cities losing the most millennials to migration, according to Census Bureau data compiled in 2021.

The survey, conducted by SmartAsset, compiled data from individuals ages 25-39 who relocated, ranking Fresno ninth on the list with 3,651 millennials moving out contrasted with an influx of 1,010.

The net loss of 2,641 millennial Fresnans ranks the city ahead of Memphis, Tennessee (No. 8), which showed a net migration of 2,747, and ahead of Omaha, Nebraska (No. 10), netting 2,543 millennials relocating.

Other California cities including Los Angeles (3), San Francisco (4), Oakland (11), San Jose(13) and Anaheim (14) also made the loser list.

Topping the list was New York City, seeing an influx of 55,400 millennials while losing 135,163.

The survey also calculated the cities seeing the highest number of millennials moving to the city, with Austin, Texas, leading the way with a net migration of 10,544 millennials.

No California cities ranked among the most coveted millennial landing spots, while Florida and Texas are becoming the hotspots. Four of the top 10 cities where millennials are moving are in the Lone Star and Sunshine States. The cities include Austin and Dallas in Texas and Jacksonville and Tampa in Florida.

Arizona saw multiple cities report an influx of millennials, with Tempe (14), Scottsdale (15) and Gilbert (17), Arizona each making the top-20 list.

States that recorded the highest number of millennials departing coincided with regions that see routinely higher taxable income than others, with five of the top-ten cities hailing from California, New York and the District of Columbia — each of which placed in the top-10 states with the highest tax rates according to TurboTax experts.

Besides California, only two states had multiple cities listed as seeing their millennial population decreasing — Nebraska (3) and Tennessee (2).
