Saint Agnes announced last week the expansion of its partnership with California Health Sciences University (CHSU), marking the third year the provider and university have partnered in medical student teaching programs.

The new partnership, a multi-year contract with CHSU, will provide core clinical rotations to third-year medical students, partnering through the Saint Agnes Graduate Medical Education (GME) Residency Program.

Saint Agnes physicians will also continue teaching CHSU fourth-year medical students for elective clinical rotations in sub-specialties.

The partnership aims to not only educate the health care providers of tomorrow, but also retain them locally; for years, the Central Valley has lagged behind in health care worker graduate retention. The partnership aims to foster an environment of community, hoping to bolster workforce numbers in the region.

“Saint Agnes and CHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine have established a strategic partnership to advance medical education by offering high-quality medical student rotations within our resident teaching services,” wrote Saint Agnes Graduate Medical Education chair and Designated Institutional Official (DIO) Mehdi Hakimipour, MD. “This collaboration aims to strengthen local ties, enhance undergraduate medical education and promote physician retention in our community.”

Students will gain experience from resident physicians and graduate medical education faculty in family medicine, internal medicine, emergency medicine and transitional year. The program will also offer a sports medicine fellowship program.

The environment also provides students with direct access to a number of educational environmental experiences, ranging from board meetings and lectures to didactics, group rounding, clinical research and more.

”We are excited that our CHSU medical students can now receive core clinical education at Saint Agnes Medical Center, one of the largest residency programs in our region, and only 6 miles from our campus,” stated John Graneto, DO, Dean of the CHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Additional information about the partnership or the GME program can be found here.
