A local business owner and former mayor of Sanger has apparently left for Ukraine to fight Russian forces.

Paul Waldie, European correspondent for The Globe and Mail in Canada, tweeted a photo of Mitchell in military-style fatigues Thursday morning. Waldie said in the tweet that he was “heading to Ukraine to fight the Russians.”

In response to a local reporter’s Twitter comment, Waldie replied that Mitchell “Put together enough cash to keep employees going for three months while he’s gone.”

Waldie appears to be reporting from the Przemysl train station in southeast Poland, which has been a first stop of tens of thousands of refugees from Ukraine fleeing the fighting, reported CBS News.

A call to Mitchell’s business, JDM Landscape, went to a voicemail box that was full. A call to Mitchell’s cell phone was first answered by what sounded like an operator’s message in a foreign language. A voicemail left on the phone was not immediately returned Thursday.

Mitchell stepped down as mayor of Sanger in 2015 after he faced allegations of corruption and conflict of interest, according to published reports.

Most recently, his company JDM Landscape, was accused of performing shoddy work, reported Fox 26.
