The City of Porterville authorized a partnership and approved a site for used mattress collection, filling the need left when a local landfill stopped operating nearly two years ago.

At its March 5 council meeting, the City Council authorized a partnership with the Mattress Recycling Council to become a mattress collection site, aiming to reduce the amount of waste that enters landfills and to discourage illegal dumping.

The city has been without a local mattress disposal site since the closure of the Teapot Dome Landfill in 2022.

The Mattress Recycling Council, which operates the Bye Bye Mattress program, assists in fulfilling requirements for mattress disposal. Working with local governments and waste management professionals, the council allows for the reimbursement of up to $2.50 per mattress collected.

The council also promotes the California Illegally Dumped Mattress Collection Initiative. By registering with the program, the city would receive up to $15 for each mattress picked up in city limits.

Monthly reporting will be required and an additional staff member will be allocated to assist with the new program.

Announcements will be made once the site opens for public use.
