The City of Porterville announced Thursday that it has been awarded a grant to install pedestrian-safe crossing signals at three designated intersections.
The $1.5 million grant for the High-Intensity Activated crossWalk (HAWK) Pedestrian Crossing Project will support the installation of the crossings used to stop traffic and allow safe crossing for pedestrians.
The HAWK pedestrian crossings will be installed in two locations: the intersections of the Santa Fe Trail at Olive and Morton avenues, as well as the intersections of Plano Street and Chase Avenue.
The installation of the HAWK system crossing at Plano Street will also require alterations to a 128-foot stretch of curb, gutter and sidewalk in order to complete the installation.
Installation at the Santa Fe Trail crossings at Olive and Morton will take place first.
The application for the project has set a goal of completing the project by 2027. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in February of 2026.
