Assemblymember Joaquin Arambula issued a statement Wednesday thanking the governor for signing AB 2240 and AB 805, both of which he co-authored.
AB 2240, a farmworker bill, eliminates requirements that forced farmworker families to move out of farm labor centers for a minimum of three months or risk ineligibility for said housing support, causing disruption to the family and their children’s education.
The law also addresses the physical condition of California’s farm labor centers to ensure they comply with health and safety codes, heating, cooling, clean water, and other vital systems.
“We know these changes will improve the lives of hard-working farmworkers and their families, and that this effort was always about giving them the dignity, respect, and protection that they have earned and deserved,” Arambula said.
AB 805, authorizes the State Water Resources Control Board to more effectively manage failing sewer systems to protect disadvantaged communities from health and safety issues.
This bill was borne with residents in East Orosi, which has been through years of a failed system.
The governor signed the bill in East Orosi, where he met with Arambula and residents experiencing water and sanitation problems.
Arambula said he is grateful for the Gov. Newsom’s decision to sign AB 805, as well as for the residents in the area that pushed for the legislation.
“Everyone should have access to safe and affordable drinking water and sanitation. We know that poorly managed sewer systems can have a harmful impact on the health and well-being of people exposed to these unacceptable situations,” Arambula
