The Reading and Beyond board of directors has announced the creation of a new $150,000 scholarship fund aimed at providing adults a pathway to a career.

While most scholarships focus on young people, the Reading and Beyond Peter Weber “A Second Chance” Scholarship Fund will be used to generate new resources and annual scholarships for adults who normally do not qualify for other forms of financial support.

The new fund’s criteria will provide a second chance to previously ineligible individuals to improve not only their lives but their family’s as well.

Founded in 1999, Reading and Beyond is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower families to achieve productive, self-reliant lives and break the cycle of generational poverty. The organization provides cradle-to-career services to help ensure academic success in individuals regardless of age.

Inspired by former Fortune 500 exec and Fresno business-public sector ambassador Peter Weber and through the California Bridge Academies Program, Reading and Beyond has helped thousands of adults around the Central Valley with job training and education, to help acquire family-sustaining careers. Reading and Beyond has raised $125,000 and will continue fundraising to reach the $150,000 goal.

Luis Santana, founder of Reading and Beyond, says, “I am glad that the Reading and Beyond Board of Directors has recognized Peter Weber for his immense contribution to Reading and Beyond and our community. Like many immigrants, Pete chose to make Fresno his home. He has focused on bringing equitable opportunity to those who have experienced huge challenges and who want a better life for themselves and their family by helping to make their dreams a Reality.”

Weber is a native of Peru.

Information on the application process will be available at the beginning of 2023 and can be accessed by visiting the Reading and Beyond website.
