Marie Callender’s near Fresno State is set to host its first-ever Fourth of July pie eating contest, with the top three contestants eating their way to a cash prize.
Scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Thursday, contestants will have six minutes to finish as many Marie Callender’s pies as possible. First place comes with a $500 cash prize, $200 for second place and $100 for third.
“We’re excited about it. It’s just about having fun, getting out in a community event and getting the word out about our pies,” said General Manager Rich Shields.
The roster of participants is already set. The 40 contestants must follow only two major rules, according to Shift Manager Neida Martinez. No use of hands, which must be kept either behind the back or at the sides; and the contestant who eats the most pie by weight wins.
Shields was inspired by the annual Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest in New York. Wanting to place a personal spin, offering contestants one of three flavors to be their taste of victory — cherry, r or blueberry.
With the amount of interest generated by the contest, Shields does have ideas to possibly do more contests like this throughout the year giving Easter as one example.
After some struggles during the pandemic, the restaurant staff wants to remind residents that they are still providing sit-down and take-out service.
Shields isn’t the only member of his staff looking forward to Thursday.
Martinez said, “We are excited to see the outcome. Anyone is welcome to come by and watch.”
