Madera Community College (MCC) is celebrating its fifth anniversary as California’s 116th community college, marking the milestone with a 12-minute video featuring messages from state and local leaders, including Assemblymember David Tangipa (R-Clovis) and Fresno State President Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval.

The anniversary marks five years of independence, although the college’s roots go back several decades. MCC began in 1988 as the Madera Community College Center, offering classes in partnership with Madera High School. In 1996, it secured its permanent 114-acre campus through a land donation.

In July 2020, the California Community College Board of Governors unanimously granted MCC full college status, citing the school’s regional impact and its dedication to providing access to higher education.

“While we are officially five years into our journey as an independent college, our story began decades ago with a commitment to this community,” said MCC President Dr. Angel Reyna. “Our students are at the heart of all we do.”

The college has expanded to serve eastern Madera County through its Oakhurst center. A new Oakhurst campus is currently under construction.

MCC recently received an eight-year accreditation, the highest term available, with commendation for its effort in building student belonging and community.

Alongside academic programs, MCC offers affordable training, including truck driver education for under $400. An Agave Distillery Program is also launching to explore the potential of agave, a drought-tolerant crop.

“Congratulations to everyone at Madera Community College on five incredible years!” said State Center Community College District Chancellor Dr. Carole Goldsmith. “This milestone is a testament to your unwavering commitment to students, community, and the power of education. You’ve created a place where dreams are nurtured, talents are discovered, and futures are forged. Here’s to the next chapter in your inspiring journey!”
