United Way Fresno and Madera Counties is reaching out to help low and middle-income residents during the tax season.

Kicking off Friday, United Way will offer free filing for tax returns through the IRS Volunteers in Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Households earning $66,000 or less will receive assistance starting at 3 p.m. at Fresno State’s Craig School of Business.

“When you’re living paycheck to paycheck, saving money on services like tax preparation is a big deal, said United Way Fresno and Madera Counties CEO Lindsay Callahan. “We are so happy to be able to help community members with free tax prep so that they can invest in their future and help make ends meet.”

In addition to getting taxes filed for free, local residents can learn if they qualify for state or federal credits.

“We really want to make sure people know these cash back credits exist, even for individuals who aren’t required to pay taxes,” said Ashley Ruiz, program manager for United Way. “It doesn’t hurt — at the very minimum — to at least check if you qualify.”

Individuals who qualify for the tax prep service also have the alternative option of filing online at myfreetaxes.com or utilizing United Way’s self-service walk-in center from 9 a.m. to 3, Monday to Friday during tax season. All services utilize H&R Block software.

United Way will also begin offering appointments starting Saturday. These can be scheduled by calling 2-1-1, or 1-866-559-4211.
