The Kaweah Health Board of Directors has chosen Marc Mertz, a longtime health care strategist with national consulting experience, as the organization’s next CEO, the Visalia-based Kaweah Health announced Monday.

He will assume the role on Dec. 22, succeeding longtime CEO Gary Herbst, who announced his retirement in June. Mertz currently serves as Kaweah Health’s chief strategy officer, a position he’s held since joining the organization in 2018.

Prior to joining Kaweah Health, Mertz worked as vice president as physician services practice leader at GE Healthcare, formerly The Camden Group, in El Segundo. His earlier roles include president of Health Check Incorporated in Florida and vice president at The Horizon Group in Virginia.

“We are excited for Marc to step into the position of CEO, bringing not only more than 20 years of experience outside our organization, but also a deep knowledge and understanding of Kaweah Health and our unique challenges,” Kaweah Health Board President Mike Olmos said. “Marc is the right person to guide Kaweah Health through the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

The board conducted a nationwide search that drew dozens of applicants. Candidates met with board members, medical staff, the executive team and community stakeholders during the months-long process.

Outside his executive duties, Mertz is active in the community, including leadership roles with the Rotary Club of Visalia and local nonprofit boards.
