A jury ruled in favor this week of cheese giant Leprino Foods in a $100 million class-action lawsuit surrounding pay, meal and break times at a Lemoore facility.
The case was originally filed in 2017 and went before a federal jury at the U.S. Eastern District Court. The Fresno trial lasted four weeks.
The class action included 1,540 people over a seven-year period.
In the complaint, attorneys for the workers claimed management would send them home without prior notice if there was no work. Leprino would make workers fill out time-off requests in order to avoid breaking employment laws, attorneys contended. Wages for those who insisted on getting paid would come out of their vacation time, the complaint read.
Attorneys for Leprino denied that any of those actions had taken place and in the end, jury members agreed.
It only took an hour of deliberation, according to a press release from Hanson Bridgett, the San Francisco law firm that represented Leprino.
“It was gratifying to be able to show the jury who Leprino Foods is and all that the company does for its employees. Leprino Foods not only complies with the law, but goes well beyond what the law requires to make their environments great places to work,” said lead partner Sandra Rappaport.
Leprino Foods is the world’s mozzarella cheese maker and top producer of whey protein and dairy ingredients. The Colorado-based company’s biggest facility is in Lemoore.
