A new tenant is taking steps to move into Fresno’s Manchester Center, tearing off another chunk of the former Sears building closed since pre-pandemic 2020.
A notice required by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control has been posted at the former Sears at 3650 Blackstone Ave. El Super, owned by Mexican grocery giant Chedraui, has applied for a license to sell beer and wine dated Aug. 29.
The posted notice was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user @greentrees07.
When Manchester Center lost its anchor tenant Sears in February 2020 after the retailer’s bankruptcy, it covered a formidable 216,000 square-foot footprint.
Since then the space has been subdivided, with retailers Ross and dd’s Discounts taking part of the former Sears owned by Seritage Growth Properties.
El Super operates more than 60 grocery stores in the western U.S., primarily in Southern California, but also New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and Texas.
El Super’s Fresno market — one of a handful in Northern California — is located at 3190 E. Tulare St.
The alcoholic beverage license for the former Sears is being transferred from 4985 Kings Canyon Road in Fresno, also held by El Super, according to Alcoholic Beverage Control filings. Before becoming a No Surrender laser tag and entertainment center, the address formerly housed a Fiesta Foods grocery location.
