The Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 376 is hosting its 39th annual End O’ Summer Fly-in & Car Show on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Sierra Sky Park.
The event is geared toward families and children and will include a family game area, live band, free face painting and aviation activities for kids.
The annual event helps fund community programs led by members of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EEA). That includes the Young Eagles flights — free introductory flights to children 8-17 with the goal of sparking an interest in aviation and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Since the EEA launched the national program in 1992, nearly 2.5 million Young Eagles have taken to the skies in the aircraft of member volunteers.
In a 2023 interview with The Business Journal, EEA Chapter 376 President Tim Cone said the flights usually last 20 to 30 minutes, with about 30-50 kids catching a flight at each event. He estimates he has personally flown more than 300 children as part of the program.
Members of the EEA want to present flying as a viable career choice. Some young children who have flown in the program have grown up to become pilots.
“When I was starting out, you were basically committing to eating dirt for a decade before it started paying better than your average job,” said Cone, an air racing champion. “That’s not the case anymore. If you don’t have something that you’re passionate about — try flying.”
Activities at the Fly-in & Car Show include flight simulators, Fresno dioramas by Frank Vasquez, Antique Flywheelers Association engine demonstrations, Clovis RC Club with a remote control aircraft display, virtual reality skydiving experience by Chris Bowling and a free coloring area by the Girl Scouts.
There is also a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. followed by a Frito-boat/hot dog luncheon around 11 a.m. EEA suggested donation: $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.
Coffee truck refreshments and kettle corn will be available for purchase. The location is 4344 W. Spaatz Ave. in Fresno.
