A top Fresno official is leaving his post based on a calling.

Mayor Jerry Dyer announced Wednesday the departure of Deputy Mayor Matthew Grundy, who has spent the past 2 ½ years in the role, since the first day the Dyer administration took office.

In his time as the deputy mayor, Grundy took on a number of  tasks, including a study on the planning and building divisions to improve service delivery — a component that’s been key to the City of Fresno’s housing efforts, according to a news release.

“I stand here at a moment where I’ve heard God yet again. This time He is guiding me to depart from my role as Deputy Mayor,” Grundy said. “I find this guidance a bit curious. I love the people of Fresno. I love our mayor, our team and my job.”

Grundy also authored the mayor’s One Fresno Housing Strategy, initiated the planning and rollout of Camp Fresno and established a partnership with the Fresno Chaffee Zoo to allow 20,000 young people and their families to visit for free.

He has also been instrumental in serving on the One Fresno Foundation.

“Deputy Mayor Grundy has been a Godsend to my Administration,” said Mayor Jerry Dyer. “His passion and talents are the very reason why the Camp Fresno, One Fresno Housing Strategy, and Youth Jobs Corp initiatives, as well as the Office of Community Affairs, have been so successful. Matthew has served me and this community with integrity and honor.

He had previously worked as Habitat for Humanity Greater Fresno Area’s CEO. Grundy’s final day will be Aug. 1.
