Cast members from the iconic movie, “The Outsiders,” will be visiting Fresno Unified schools and will be a part of a community screening to benefit The Stay Gold Foundation.
The Stay Gold Foundation was founded by C. Thomas Howell, who played Ponyboy Curtis in the 1983 film.
“Our mission is to support teachers and inspire students by providing free copies of ‘The Outsiders,’ a classic novel that resonates with themes of resilience, friendship, and understanding. Through engaging school visits, we aim to ignite a passion for reading and foster meaningful connections between educators and their students,” according to The Stay Gold Foundation website.
On Sept. 12, Howell will be joined by Darren Dalton (Randy Anderson) and Leif Garrett (Robert Sheldon) to meet students at Farber Educational Campus from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
The following night, the three will join audiences at Fresno High School’s Royce Hall for a screening and a Q&A session at 7 p.m.
The film is based on a novel written by S.E. Hinton. Director Francis Ford Coppola chose to adapt the novel after 107 students from Lone Star School in Sanger petitioned for the project.
Librarian Jo Ellen Misakian spearheaded the effort, and the movie originally premiered in Fresno.
Farber teacher Gina Vertson, one of the original petition signers, helped organize the event to bring the three actors back to Fresno.
“The powerful themes of isolation and the desire to belong evident in “The Outsiders” still connect with young people today, sparking meaningful conversations. We’re excited to welcome cast members to Fresno High and the Farber Educational Campus,” said Fresno Unified Superintendent Misty Her in a news release.
Tickets are available on The Stay Gold Foundation website.
