The Fresno County Department of Public Health (FCDPH) has confirmed two influenza-related deaths among individuals aged 65 and up for the 2024-25 flu season.
Across the country, there were 2,610 deaths across all age groups as of Jan. 18, while California has reported 404 deaths as of Jan. 25.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the friends and family of these individuals,” said Dr. Rais Vohra, interim health officer, in a news release.”
Health officials continue to stress the importance of flu vaccination, especially for age groups most at risk, which include people over 65 years old, children younger than five, pregnant women and those with certain medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
The FCDPH also continues to recommend receiving updated COVID-19 and RSV vaccines. They also suggest that health care workers be up to date on flu vaccines or use masks while in their workplaces.
“With respiratory infections circulating in our community this time of year, it is more important than ever for people to get a flu vaccine, as well as an updated COVID-19 vaccine and the RSV vaccine if you are eligible,” Vohra said.
The FCDPH suggests that those with a cough, sore throat and fever stay at home to help reduce transmissions.
Flu vaccines remain available through health care providers, pharmacies and special vaccination events. For more information, the public can contact the FCDPH Immunization Program at (559) 600-3550 or visit fcdph.org/flu.
“Protect your loved ones, neighbors, and your community,” Vohra said. “Do your part – It is not too late to get your flu shot.”
