The Fresno City Council will vote Thursday on whether to support a $6 million contribution and transfer three city-owned parcels for a new affordable housing development in West Fresno near Roeding Park.

According to documents, the proposed location is 1444 W. White Ave. The location was formerly Travel Inn & Suites.

The council action would provide the funds and land to developer the Cesar Chavez Foundation for the planned 170-unit Parkview Apartments.

Fifty-two of the units will be permanent supportive housing, and an additional 91 will be rental housing.

The Cesar Chavez Foundation describes its mission as “to carry on Cesar’s life’s work of uplifting the lives of Latinos and working families by inspiring and transforming communities through social enterprises that address essential human, cultural and community needs.”

Over the past year, several neglected motels have been transformed into affordable housing. One of them, Manzanilla Commons, opened in June and is a few blocks north of Travel Inn & Suites on Crystal Avenue.

Documents state that the Cesar Chavez Foundation is setting the eligibility for residents at equal to or less than 80% of the area median income. The funding will not exceed the slated $6 million and will remain affordable for 55 years.
