After about two hours of questions and discussion, the Fresno City Council voted to table a decision on the relocation of the Costco store in Northwest Fresno.

Councilmembers expressed concerns about impacts related to traffic and emissions along Herndon Avenue and Riverside Drive, where the new location is planned to replace the Costco on West Shaw Avenue.

They requested that city staff return with more information about the project before approving a plan amendment and rezone application, environmental impact report certification conditional use permits and development permit.

Specifically, they wanted a plan to limit truck traffic on Riverside Drive.

Since 2018, Costco has been seeking to relocate the existing warehouse store, having outgrown its current footprint. The lease ends for the Shaw Avenue store in 2025.

The project would include a 219,216 square-foot warehouse retail building, gas station with 32 pumps and a 4,800 square-foot car wash that would be a first for Fresno.
