A Fresno-based mattress retailer has gone out of business, leading to the liquidation and closure of 15 retail stores in the western U.S.
Mattress Land was founded in 1996, and in that time expanded the brand to four states.
The Sleep Fit Corp., parent company of Mattress Land, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection on July 17. The stores closed at the end of June, according to longtime employees who shared the news on social media.
Sleep Fit Corp. has a store in Fresno at 36 E. Herndon Ave., which was also its headquarters, as well as Clovis (1010 Shaw Ave., Ste. A), Visalia (3731 S. Mooney Blvd.), Bakersfield, Merced, Atascadero and San Luis Obispo. In Nevada, there are stores in Carson City, Sparks and Reno.
Mattress Land of WA, Inc. also filed for bankruptcy protection, with a total of five stores located in Spokane Valley and Spokane, Washington, and Coeur d’Alene, Meridian and Nampa, Idaho.
Mattress Land is owned by William J. Van Beurden, also president, CEO and chairman. Van Beurden is also chair of Kingsburg-based Van Beurden Insurance Services, Inc.
A message left for Van Beurden Insurance Services President Chris Van Beurden seeking comment was not returned.
