A Fresno bank branch is once again hosting a well-known statue that disappeared in August 2021.

A replica of the giant abacus that graced the former Guarantee Savings and Loan building at Ashlan and Blackstone was being reinstalled Thursday. An employee with CGP Maintenance & Construction Services said it should be complete by Friday.

It is a recreation of the original abacus that had movable parts and once showed how much the bank had on deposit, reported yourcentralvalley.com.

The original statue was inadvertently removed during building maintenance in August of 2021, according to a Citibank representative.

“We are pleased to replace the abacus with a design that reflects the cultural, historical, and architectural significance of the original,” Citibank said in a statement to The Business Journal. “We anticipate it will remain a part of the community for decades to come.”

The original building was designed by architect Bob Stevens, whose work was known all over Fresno, reported yourcentralvalley.com.

The Fresno Historic Preservation Commission has worked with current tenant Citibank on bringing back the sculpture.
